... atmosphere dissipate due to much lower pressures? Also, would the ambient air temp. be as cold as it is currently at 30,000' (-48)?

You have several questions there. First, where would 30,000 feet of water come from? Second, what is sea level? Third, why is air cold at altitude?
1. No answer.

3. Sunlight warms the surface. Air is warmed as it touches the surface. High altitudes are cold because the air does not get to the surface much.
And this extra bit just because it is so neat: www.possiblywrong.wordpress.com/2011/09/09/if-the-earth-were-a-cube/
You need a lot of knowledge to debunk bible stories. You don't have to read many pages in history to realize that the sky above the Earth looked very different just a few thousand years ago. You might wonder why the ancients named their god after a planet that most people now can't even point to. Well, they were quite explicit about that: they didn't worship gods named for planets, they worshiped the planets. In ancient days, Jupiter and Saturn dominated the sky, and Venus and Mars put on quite a show for a long time.
Here is a careful investigation of ancient myths and legends, considering stories in hundreds of languages from all over the world and going back to 10,500 BC. It is very long, and it is still in progress. www.saturniancosmology.org/
Lots of specially trained smart people have looked hard for evidence of a world wide flood. They found two. Neither of them was Noah's flood of 2349 BC. Nevertheless, people all over the world recorded a flood that year and they all agreed on all the details. You might be surprised to learn what actually happened. Here is the section about Noah: www.saturniancosmology.org/noah.php
BTW that book also explains where 30,000 feet of water came from, but you'll have to look carefully for it because it's so simple it only takes a couple of lines to explain.
All of the rest of it notwithstanding, the estsblished date for the flood plsces it square in the middle of the 6th Dynastic period of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, over 100 years after the completion of the great pyrimids of Giza. There has been no disruption to the historical record of Egypt since the First Kingdom started in 3100, bc. Also, there has been no disruption to the genetic record of mankind which means there could not have been an extinction event such as the flood. Additionally, given the great genetic diversity of the world today, it would be impossible to achieve in only a few thousand years since the flood. In fact, if we all came from the sons of Noah then we would all carry the Cohen Modal Haplotype. We would all be jews. If you google flood of the Epic of Gilgamesh you will see what the inspiration for both the Hebrew flood story and the Babylonian flood story, both being almost identical to each other. Ergo, the flood of Noah never happened.
Ok, so your mind is made up and you don't care at all about additional information. You think your knowledge is better than a guy who has spent over twenty years researching the subject. With such an attitude, why did you bother to ask the first question?
Don't answer that. If you don't care about what I have to offer, I d*m sure don't care to discuss your meanderings.
Thanks, Jewels. The question originates from the flood story (Noah) in the Bible. The ark is alleged to have floated above the highest mountains. The waters covered the entire earth. I reasoned that if the ark was floating above Mt. Everest it would have been 30,000 feet higher than pre-flood sea level. I surmised that it would therefore be subjected to ambient air temps that exist at that altitude. The thought then crossed my mind that the rising flood waters would effectively push the atmosphere upward where a new "sea level would be established. Or would it? Atmospheric pressure at 30,000' are roughly 1/3 of what they are at sea level. Ultimately, I am trying to establish if 1) the ark and its inhabitants would have frozen and 2) would the low pressures lead to a bleeding off of the atmospheric gasses? I'm writing a book with the intention of debunking the mythical stories of the Old Testament. Thanks! Dennis Blue
