If I freehand draw a copyright image, and want to display it. Do I have to ask the owner permission to display the drawing I did? I don't want to sell my artwork but just want to display it.

In a nutshell, If you copy another artist's work and sell it as if it is your own, then yes It would be safe to say that it would be a form of stealing. it is called copyright infringement i think. If the work is not copyrighted then go ahead. The smart thing to do, is not to do it unless it isn't copyrighted.
Yes if your drawing duplicates another artist's work then that's copyright infringement and it doesn't matter if the image you draw is a drawing, or a photo. If you decided to change the image to avoid the infringement your drawing could not recognizable as a copy of the original image by an "ordinary observer".
