My mother stays in an area that almost only has verizon presence, and getting her the SVC GSM phone would be taking a massive chance, keeping in mind that the phone's got to be useful in an emergency. I know tracfone have access to both GSM, and CDMA networks, so I find it surprising that they're only selling a GSM based phone for seniors. Can this be true?

Strangely enough the SVC plan is merely a renamed tracfone product. The phone, the prices, the plans, they're all exactly the same, bar maybe the fact that the smasung t155 always comes with DMFL included (under correction).
What this means to you is that you can pretty much choose any tracfone, and call it an SVC phone - they're all very basic, and very cheap, and they also include CDMA phones. The only thing to watch for is that you get DMFL with the phone you choose.
