I was born in Canada but my great grandparents at from the U.S., does that make me an American?

No. You would have to be born in the US, or at least have parents who are US citizens. My great grandparents are from Sweden, Germany, Ireland and Scotland, and one is full-blooded Chippewa; that does not make me a citizen of anywhere except the country where I was born.
