I read somewhere that black cases contribute to the phone heating up. Is that true?

The color black really wont contribute to heat unless you have it sitting outside on a sunny day.

If your phone is getting hot all phone cases will generally cause it to heat up faster since they're likely to trap in heat. Unless the phone case is designed to let heat escape you'll want to take it off if your phone starts getting hot.
