My apartments complex has been giving me some trouble lately. Starting in January, I have had mice for almost two months and they refuse to send pest control out more than once a week, I've continually documented seeing the mouse and finding its droppings everywhere, and still they refuse to do anything. It has escalated to the point that they refuse to send pest control anymore, even though he determined that it was holes in the foundation that are the definitive problem. In December I re-signed for another 6 month lease, 2 months later (the beginning of February) they asked me to sign a new lease. When I asked why, because I had just signed a new one in Dec., they said they were increasing my pet rent and garage rent. I didn't feel comfortable with the fact that they were changing my lease 2 months after I had already signed another one, so when I asked for a copy of my old lease so I could look over the changes, the manager refused, saying she had already shredded it. I then proceeded to call the person in charge of my particular office, and she said she would personally look over it and see that I didn't have to sign the new one, since I had been with their complex for over a year, and that she would come in with me to look over the new lease. She never came by and I haven't been able to get a hold of her for 2 weeks. Things have become far worse this last week, the managers are lodging false complaints ( which I perceive to be an attempt to fine me to make up for the raise in rates or to push us out of our lease) and stating I am in violation of my lease (even though the manager said she shredded my old one, and I never signed the new one). I don't know what to do, I can't stand the way things are going here. I am loosing money on food and my health is at risk. Is there anyway to get out of my lease without seeking legal help? Is there some kind of Houston renters association I can reach out to to help mitigate the situation? I'm a college student and I can't afford legal help, so recommendations on what to do in this situation would be amazing.

For one you should always have a copy of anything you sign. On top of it, they can not hold it over you. You need to give them a 60 day notice and they can not do anything. take pics of how it is when you leave. remmber when you move in any where to take pics of it before and after. It will save your be hind. I will pray for you. I really don't know if this helps not ever been in your shoes. Legal aid may be able to help you too.
