Of course it depends on what you are willing to spend. For you I would suggest a Macbook laptop with Windows 7. They cost anywhere from $500 and the brand new retail macbook's can easily be $1,000.
If you are willing to invest, Amazon.com usually has pretty good deals and free shipping.
If you're studying interactive media for a career, then investing in a good computer is worth it in the long run.
If you wish to apply Adobe CS6 effectively, with out long waits for rendering effects etc, you will need a high spec PC & that will not be cheap! You could do this on a laptop, but it will be a compromise as they are designed primarily for portability,so size, weight requirements limit performance as that usually means heat, that also hits life expectations. On a cost for cost against a desktop they are 1/3 slower. You could also struggle with future updates + the struggle to upgrade. Of course the biggest benefit to you is multiple & or large high def monitors!
A general spec you will need:-
CPU A fast, quad-core processor such as an Intei i7 3820
Lots of RAM at least 16GB (8GB is quoted as ok, but is not!)
This does not have to be the performance gaming type but be of good quality. The idea is to try and hold the work project in the RAM and not on the scratch file on the hard drive. Some professionals go for 64GB!
16GB kit (4GBx4), Ballistix 240-pin DIMM, DDR3 PC3-12800- 5 I have seen recommended.
A full featured motherboard such as the highly thought of ASRock X79 Extreme6. This is the foundation of your system and not cheap. This will give you great upgrade scope & e Sata & USB3 connectivity,
A graphics card that supports GPU-acceleration found in Photoshop CS6. Some opt for the expensive Quadro 2000 tesla C2075, but a GTX 660M is more affordable. (Look for at least 1+GB of DDR5)
It is desirable to run the operating system (64 Bit Windows 7) & your Adobe software on a SSD of 250GB & store on a HDD on at least 1TB. Some go in for RAID but really only Raid 1 another storage drive for mirroring safety.
Optical drive: LG WH12LS39 12X Blu-ray Burner
Power supply unit: CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX750 V2 750W power supply unit
Case: Thermaltake V4 Black Edition chassis or Antec 300.
This is just a guide system and be aware that Intel Haswell CPU's & motherboards are arriving with real performance enhancements. I have been warned & if any one can can confirm please, that it will have a new socket, (typical Intel).
If you are thinking taking this up as a profession, then building a system will be of great experience, it really is not that difficult & well within the means of someone who can handle the sophistication of CS6!
Hope this is of some interest if not help!
Thank you very much, your answer is very helpful :)
