I just recently had vein surgery on both of my legs. I was giving nitrous oxide and passed out. Why?

My body went completely numb and when i asked the doctor what had happen. He told me I passed out. I remember hearing the machine that was keeping track of my pulse and oxygen level beeping extremely face.
