I heard when you retired from the railroad in early 1900's you received a gold spike? is that true?

Not quite. A commemorative gold spike was sometimes produced to signify the completion of a long railroad track. Some are still in existence in museums but some were broken up and distributed to the men who worked on the railroad as a kind of souvenir. Each man got a very small piece.
