Ideas are like butts: everybody has one, and most of them stink. The world does not need more inventors, it needs more salesmen.
Do you know who invented the steam engine? It has been invented and forgotten several times in the last two thousand years, but nobody cared until Robert Fulton put one in a boat, and salesmen happened to be looking for better ways to transport goods at that time: better than a horse drawn wagon. And that happened to be about the same time that Noah Webster, the dictionary guy, proposed a plan for people to give their savings to a steward to invest, receiving in return a portion of the steward's profits. We now call that a savings bank, very different from the modern reserve bank because a savings bank loans actual money and a reserve bank only operates on credit. Noah's plan loosed a flood of investment capital at the exact time when capital was needed to finance the industrial revolution. But it was people like Isaac Singer, who invented consumer financing to sell sewing machines, and Diamond Jim Brady who showed the world how to get rich selling steel plows, and Sam Colt who figured he could sell guns cheaper if all the parts were interchangeable, that made the revolution real.
