Meningitis is an acute inflammation of the covering of the brain. Meningitis can be caused by infection (viruses, bacteria, and fungi), toxins, and allergy. Methods of transmission of infective meningitis depend upon the infective agent. Generally speaking, meningitis can be transmitted through contaminated air, contaminated hands, food/water, and through insects. Meningitis is not an easily transmittable disease and its development depends not only upon the infective agent but also upon the level of immunity in the body. Meningitis is often a complication of a severe infection of the ear, sinuses, throat, lungs or head injuries, etc. Young children suffer from meningitis the most often. Bacterial meningitis is a very serious condition that can end with death or can have heavy neurological consequences.
