arguing for the different treatment of indigenous peoples is just different type of discrimination- whether that differential treatment is against, or in, their favour. It isn't right to excuse indigenous people from the same structures of law, just because their ancestors may have been oppressed. Many people were oppressed in history. But that's what it should be-history. We can decide whether or not to forge a new path, or just change the positions of the players. As a person once said, "we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes a Canadian and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin." If indigenous First Nations cease to exist, we wouldn't be dealing with an epidemic of such extreme poverty. History is meant to belong in the past. Why do we linger, on things that are dead? I'm not quite sure, why the past claims my head.
I am wondering why there is indigenous rights. Shouldn't we all have the same rights?

If you are talking about American history, the tribes used to be considered vermin, to be exterminated. So there had to be some code words to get people to pretend they were humans and stop murdering them. Apaches were still at war with the white invaders until about 1960.
As for rights, the government firmly believes that everybody has whatever rights are convenient for the government to grant.
Very good question. Here's another one to ponder, WHO has the authority to set the standards of right and wrong?
That question was raised at the very beginning of human history, according to what the Bible says at Genesis 2:16, 17; 3:1, 5.
Although the Bible say God set the right standards for humans from the beginning just like any parent would for their child. Man, as it says decided to go contrary to those instructions and follow what was in his heart. The Bible says about the heart, “The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate.” (Jeremiah 17:9)
By refusing to respect the limits placed on them by God, they asserted that they and their offspring would be better off setting their own standards of right and wrong. The results? History shows that, "man has dominated man to his harm." Ecclesiastes 8:9
From the beginning we all had the same rights, we all had a choice. Although our rights are not equal as humans anymore because of our social, political or even, religious views that have caused hatred, prejudice and a distorted opinion far from the way God instructed man from The Bible, which says, "And let us consider one another so as to incite to love and fine works", Hebrews 10:24 We still have choices.
In order to benefit from our individual choice, in the right direction, we first need to know what direction to go in. We can only achieve this starting with one person at a time.
There are 9,000,000 people around the world, who individually took this to heart, that is, to find out how! I am one of them.
The Bible not only helps us to discern right from wrong but also motivates us to do what is right. I encourage you to find out for yourself, by going to jw.org ref: "What does the Bible really teach".
We need to start somewhere to make a change.
