I was wondering if it was durable at the same time not to hard but enough to maintain shape. This is my first time working with this type of foam

Upholstery foam is soft, too soft for upholstery IMO. But it is almost the only kind of foam you can find. If you search for packing materials, you can find different grades of foam, but they are hard to find.
What exactly do you mean by 'durable'? Any kind of foam can be pulled apart with your fingers, and a pet can destroy it faster than you would think possible.
You can buy pillow size or mattress size pieces of foam at a fabric store such as JoAnn's or Michael's.
