I’m severely depressed. I don’t like the idea of antidepressants but I think my depression is getting to the point where I can’t handle it. Could talking to my doctor about medication be a good idea.
I’m depressed. Can antidepressants help, or will they just make it worse?

The first line of defense against depression and anxiety is B vitamins. Get B-50 or B-100 pills. Vitamin B2 is a water soluble dye that turns urine bright yellow. When the color fades, it's time for another dose. Read some books about nutrition so you know how to eat right.
How long & often have you been seeing a therapist, if at all?
It's a good idea to ask, in that they'll have a better judgement of the matter than some random strangers. What you need to keep in mind is that it takes a few weeks for them to come into effect and thence forward on a regular basis, and must be accompanied by talk therapy still. What would you say is the state of the underlying issues?
For a few weeks, it will help you for a bit but along the way it won't. The best way to combat this depression is are free:
1. Join a fitness program and exercise to release stress hormone
2. Meet new people and interact with them
3. Talk to a friend
4. Talk to a psychiatrist or a counselor ask advice
5. Open up to your parents
6. Go out and explore the world
7. Write your sad and depressing thoughts thru creative literature.
These things will give you long relief than using meds like that.
Most importantly, know that you're not alone in this. Ask for help and it shall be provided.
