I'm interested in how the properties of blood would affect the environment, if there was a river of it. Would plants be able to grow on it's banks? How would various creatures react? How would the blood soaking into the ground affect it? I'm not an ecologist or a chemist so I can only guess. Any and all ideas are welcome.

Is it supposed to be some kinda magical river, or blood of unusual composition? Look up a blood timelapse video, pretty soon you'd have a chunk of smelly proteins & minerals.
Besides, I'd say you should either write what you know or what you desire. Unless you're writing a textbook or for nerds, suspension of disbelief is on the side of immersion, not accuracy.
