Every soldier during wartime loses friends, perhaps right next to him, or even holding them. Been there. Feelings are sometimes conflicting. Pride for him being a friend and compatriot who likely fought for you. Agonizing grief over his loss and how he lost his life. This is why most men in combat try to not be too close to too many. And pure hatred for the enemy leading to a deeper sense of duty tinged with revenge. Sometimes guilt, thinking "It should have been me." Acceptance,"It was just his time. Fear,"I might be next." If a soldier's military loses a war, feelings are also varied. Deep sadness for his country. Guilt, for not having died when so many did. He may still carry a sense of vengeance for his enemy. And even pride for his efforts toward winning. Shame can be the most devastating. All of these and more can last a lifetime
