How did people communicate by mail in Egypt, Rome, and many of those cities in Bible times?

Private mail, if one was wealthy, dispatch a slave to deliver it. Most,however, would have letters delivered by acquaintances, family, friends, soldiers, merchants, even strangers traveling in the right direction. An important concern though would be how trustworthy the letter carrier was and whether he would convey the message carefully and intact.
