I want to write a song about a friend that I used to be really close with. I play the piano but I have no idea where to start with chords that sound the way I want them to. Some of the lyrics are "we've shared everything there is to share, but I don't think you remember anymore". The song supposed to be sad and reminiscient. Some chord progressions would be very helpful.

Well, you can look at some old photos of you and your friend for inspiration or go to some places that the two of you enjoyed being at or listen to the songs you two like and that kind of stuff. Just try to collect memories and i bet your song is going to be amazing! Good luck!
Start with the right notes..
I am self taught and don't know keys that well so il just tell you some notes that will give the sound your looking for
C, D, Dsharp, F, G, G sharp, Asharp and C
Try starting with C, Dsharp, G then go to D, F, A sharp
I have a little trick when choosing notes.. play around the keyboard till you find a key that works. Then play as many melodies as you can think of using only those keys... after a bit of practice youl train your ears to recognize the feel of the sound. From there choose 1 note that stands out in your melodies and try to include that note in as many of the chords you use as possible.
Thank you so much!! You are the best! Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Thank you for answering my question. Whenever a random memory pops into my head I think of lyrics to add to my song. Thanks for taking the time to answer - it means a lot! :)
