The problem is that most people do not understand what home schooling is supposed to be. They are so fully indoctrinated in the slave school system that it takes a while to learn what traditional schooling used to be. Here are a book and an essay to help you understand:

Your first grader probably does not read yet. You teach a kid to read by reading to him. Story books at bed time work well. When he is reading on his own, get a Latin book and start him on memorizing declensions so he can read stories out of history.
