For me, it's all dependent on what I eat. Avoid all dairy products (they encourage the production of phlegm). Eat lots of food high in vitamin C (oranges, limes, lemons, tomatoes). The thing that helps me most is a certain combination of foods often found in Indian cooking: onions, garlic, chillies. When I feel myself coming down with a cold, I eat the hottest curry I can find.
In the past, when I was coming down with a cold 90% of the time it would turn into a full-blown cold. Since I started with the heavy doses of onions, garlic and chillies, it's now only about 30% of the time and the other 70% the symptoms just fade away and I never develop a full cold.
So glad to hear it worked out for you. People don't always believe me when I tell them it really works. :)
