How Stock Exchanges(not Investors or brokers) earn Profits? What we call to this profit earning?

Stock Exchanges get their profits as any other company - they offer a product (the ring, the softwhare, the regulations etc.) and gets comissions and fees from listed companies/brokers/investors etc. They can also sell market reports and other insights into the market. What do you mean by the 'characteristics' of the market?
