Your credit card information is safer online with in a secure shopping area then it is when you give your card to a waitress at a restaurant or a clerk at a gas station. Fare more credit card fraud stems from stolen paper reciepts then from hackers intercepting transmissions to and from a secure shopping sites.

It depends on where you are providing your information. For example whether it is online giants like amazon or ebay, or whether you are providing information to the individual online store.
