Although outer shells of some elegant luxurious pens are simple, there are many pens having intricate designs engraved on their outer shells. Does anyone know how those intricate engravings are done? Are they hand-engraved, CNC-machined, or done with any other methods? I would like to know how they are manufactured.

The shells of pens can be mass produced with a Waterbury Farrel transfer press using a process called drawing. The features on the periphery of the part can be installed with a number of different techniques such as beeding and with the use of various dies and punch combinations.
Transfer presses are amazing machines and can be rebuilt from 100 year old machines and still meet the production requirements of present day. Although, the expertise of how to setup and engineer components using a transfer press are far more rare than the available machines.
