Butane lighters hit the market in 1963. They were cheap enough that I don't even remember what I paid for the first one, although I remember how clumsy the design was. Butane lighters have always been priced between $0.35 and $1.50, even while inflation has pushed the value of a dollar down to a fiftieth of what it was then. (Would you believe twenty cents for a pack of cigarettes? That's what they cost.)
