How much should you exercise a day?

It depends on your fitness level and what you are trying to achieve. It should not be 7 days a week.

I workout 3 times a week with a trainer. He works out about 5 times a week because every day he goes to the academy they are doing something physical but that will drop back when he graduates from the academy and becomes a sheriff. His girlfriend who is super fit and just became a highway patrol officer works out twice a week.

Whatever you have in mind, you need to learn the business and make up an appropriate schedule.

I know the recommendation is to allow for each muscle group to rest, so leave a day in between. If you have a routine that you do Monday, Wednesday and Friday, for Tuesday and Thursday do cardio like elliptical or treadmill.
