How many submarine officers and sailors died in world war II?

i dont have the actual body count,but as far as i uderstand from looking at actual war 2 footage ,it would appear that more men died then made it home.which is a real good reason for us as commanding officer to reavaluate our approach to the whole concept of sending foot soldiers into battle first.
