In the periodic table of elements, there are 7 horizontal rows of elements called "periods". The vertical columns of elements are called "groups" or "families".
Members of the families in periodic table have similar properties. The families are labled at the top of the column in one of 2 ways.
*Roman numbers(older method) -many chemists prefer and still use this method.
Few examples:
lA - Alkali ( Na, K)
llA - Alkaline earth metals ( Ca)
VllA -halogen( Cl , I )
VlllA - noble gases.
So there are 9different families as follow :
*alkali metals
*alkaline earth metals
*transition metals
*none metals
*rare earth elements
*other metals
*halogens
*metalloids
*noble gases
Good luck! :)
Oh I forgot to say the other method of labeling families.
*newer method uses the numbers 1 to 18.
