If the dimensions are not an exact multiple of the tile size then some tiles have to be cut. So you find the number of tiles on each side plus the one that gets cut and multiply those two numbers. Just figuring the area of each tile and the area of the floor will trick you into buying too few tiles. Sometimes tiles get broken so you need more to allow for breakage.
