A good writer understands the importance of research to write a believable story. It sounds like you're on your way with your research question! I looked up your answer about how many children couples normally have in the Middle Ages.
The Encyclopedia Britannica says: "The average medieval household . . .contained about four or five members." So this means that with the parents, there were usually TWO or THREE children in a household.
I also found more information in Peter Fleming's book "Family and Household in Medieval England" and Linda Mitchell's book "Family Life in the Middle Ages." These sources said that many women gave birth to more children, but usually only two or three survived the hard life and diseases like the Black Death (the Plague).
So, TWO or THREE children is the answer!
You might check an encyclopedia in your library to see what it says too.
