How long should I wait to date after an abusive boyfriend?

Could you elaborate a little bit (if it's not too touchy), in what way was he abusive - emotionally, verbally, physically? Abuse is abuse at the end of the day and there's no condoning that - each is as bad as the other.. but if you could provide us with more details we might have a better understanding of the situation and where you can go from here.
