How long did texans have to wait for statehood?!?

Officially ten years but history is not always so simple as all that. When Texas won independence, there was a move for it to become a British enclave as opposed to being part of America. There were also feelings it should become a nation of its own that would expand and push back Mexico and the Union. I think the second president of Texas was strong on that but sadly I can't remember his name. I'm not American so I don't know that all that much about American history.
