How long can I store a drum of deisel fuel for use in an emergency generator?

Approx. 12 months to 3 years, then it's generally ruined. All fuel has a shelf life. Petrol (Am E - gas) has a maximum shelf life of about 18 months. All those zombie flicks where they syphon fuel out fo cars are complete cr*p.
