He was last fed at 5-6am today and won't be fed until 8-9am tomorrow. he doesn't have special dietary requirements and he isn't overweight, I'm just worried.

A pet has a schedule same as you. You can get used to eating once a day, but a change in schedule takes a while to get used to. So you are saying tomorrow's meal might be three hours late. Not a big deal.
