Because there is a massive wealth gap, the richest 1% in the US make more money than the other 99% combined. The average GDP of the US is no indication of the average earnings of an individual US citizen. It is the same in the UK, average GDP is about 50,000 sterling, but the average "Joe" makes nothing like that, closer to 18,000 sterling. The gap is even worse in the US.
For example:
john earns 1,000,000
steve earns 20,000
phil earns 20,000
rob eanrs 20,000
ann earns 20,000
average earnings (or GDP) = 216,000
So an outsider would think everyone earns 200,000+ a year if he only looked at the GDP but he reality is far from that. And it is this "inequality" that has gotten everyone so angry recently.
