I'm sure I have polycystic ovaries, both of my sisters have it, and I have almost every symptom... Weight gain, very irregular periods, etc. I have a doctors appointment in the morning, and I was wondering if I could be diagnosed without a pelvic exam? I'd really rather skip that part and since I have 2 family members with it and have so many of the symptoms, I don't see why that part is necessary... If a pelvic exam IS required, can I refuse a breast exam?

Most women with PCOS grow many small cysts on their ovaries. That is why it is called polycystic ovary syndrome. The cysts are not harmful but lead to hormone imbalances. I am pretty sure that is why they would need to do a pelvic exam, just to confirm. I had irregular periods and they diagnosed me with it and did an exam and found a cyst that could have turned cancerous, so I dont think its a bad idea to just suck it up and get the exam. You very well could have PCOS though because PCOS seems to run in families, so your chance of having it is higher if other women in your family have PCOS, irregular periods, or diabetes. PCOS can be passed down from either your mother's or father's side. I dont think you are required to get a breast exam...I dont think they can force you...but I dont think it would hurt...really up to you. Good luck!
