My girlfriend is a Christian and I am not. If you ask me I'd say "we don't know, it may exist it may not". We talked about it the other day and apparently god comes first then family second. That is so wrong, in my opinion. She also agrees with giving all glory to god... How can you do that? Your family has sacrificed and worked hard in order for you to be where you are today. If it weren't for my parents' sacrifices and support I would never be playing top college basketball. And all my struggles and hard work that I fought through and time I put in, I am proud of myself. So I thank my parents for all they've done and my motivation is to make them proud and get them a better life... Not do it for god and give him all the glory. He has nothing to do with reality. And if I were to say "god doesn't exist for sure" is the exact same thing as saying "god does exist", only the opposite way. And both of those are wrong because nobody knows!
How is it possible for a person to love "god" more than their own family?

From a Christian way of thinking, you're girlfriend is right. this doesn't mean she doesn't love her family, she loves her family a great deal. Christians love God more because God is true love, true righteousness, As Christians we strive to be more like God every day, this allows us to love people the right way. If you love someone or something over God more, then you do not love God, you're then loving the world and desires of men [which will pass, and you will pass with it].
I struggled with the same thing you are for a few years ago. My mother loved God more than she loved me, hearing this upset me like it upsets you right now, but as I started reading the bible more and started to learn about who God really is it finally made sense to me.
There is a popular Christian saying "only God can love you more". this is because God is love. There is zero darkness and evil in God, there is no sin in him. This is why Christians love him more than anything or anyone on earth. I hope this at least helps you understand more and it doesn't push you away from your girlfriend. It may sound wrong and mean right now, but she's right to love God more than anyone or anything.
I see that you mentioned that if it weren't for your parents then you wouldn't have been able to play college basketball, and you said that they help feed you and sacrifice everything for you. I just wanted to tell you this. Who gave you such great parents in the first place? Who is allowing you to live every day? God is responsible for your spiritual and physical life. You wouldn't have been able to exist on your own without the help of God. Your parents can help you as well, which is why God gave you them. But God was the one who planned your life before you were born, and he knew the reason for you to be on this Earth. This is one reason why Christians love God more than their parents. It's because God is your spiritual father and mine, and he's the one mainly taking care of you, but you need to accept him that he is your father by becoming born again. When you become born again, you are accepting Christ as your personal savior as well. Another thing is that God knows everything in your heart which makes him more closer of a friend to you than your parents. Not every teenager tells their parents every sin or bad thing they've done, but God knows what sin you have committed and he can forgive you for the wrong that you've done. All this goes to show how close God is to you, and he's more closer to you than your parents which is why many Christians love God more.
Even if there are bad things happening to you God makes the bad experience result in good. Have you heard of the Bible story about Joseph and his 12 brothers? His own brothers sold him into slavery! If that was me in that situation, I would have been pretty mad. Joseph however trusted in God even if he was worked as a slave. When the owner of the house he worked in falsely accused him of having an affai r with his wife, he was sent to prison. Joseph didn't blame God during that time. Instead he trusted in God to guide him out of the rough time. God did help Joseph then because of his faith. He became a pharoah in Egypt and God blessed him and his family. If you believe life is going downhill, trust in God and have faith because he will bring you up like Joseph.
Through Jesus’ death, the old Mosaic Law was done away with and new commandments were given. What commandments did he give us? Foremost, to worship the true God, Jehovah, and him alone. (Matthew 4:10; John 17:3)
Second, Jesus said: “You must love your neighbor as yourself.” Love of God and love of neighbor are really inseparable. The second is a by-product of the first. (1 John 4:20, 21) If we love our neighbors as ourselves, we will treat them the way we want them to treat us. (Matthew 7:12) We thereby show that we love the God who made us—and them—in his image.—Genesis 1:26.
Therefore if we truly love God, then our love for him supercedes anything else. But that does not mean we do not love our family and friends. In fact, having love for God would inspire us to love our family more.
It is possible for a person to love God more than their family when they realize the Truth of who their family is, who their father is, who their mother is. Our parents are nothing but a manifestation of God. When we realize we are not the body, the mind and ego, but the Divine Soul and the Soul is nothing but God energy, then we love God more than anything because we realize that only God lives, there is nothing other than God. Everything we see around us is God, everybody that we see is God. It is just like going to a jewelry shop and thinking - this is a ring, this is a chain, this is a bracelet, until we contemplate and realize that it is not a bracelet or a chain or a ring…there is gold in everything, without gold there would be no jewelry. So when we realize there is God in everybody, we realize that our family is nothing but a manifestation of God. Then we will love God, we will love our family as they are God.
