Prime numbers are the clue: More accurately, it's the prime factors of the radicands.
18 = 2 * 3 * 3 where 3 * 3 = 9
50 = 2 * 5 * 5 where 5 * 5 = 25
Extract the integer roots:
2 * sqrt (18) = 2 * sqrt (2 * 9) = 2 * 3 * sqrt (2) = 6 * sqrt (2)
sqrt (50) = sqrt (2 * 25) = 5 * sqrt (2)
And quite miracu-less-ly, it all adds up to
6 * sqrt (2) + 5 * sqrt (2) = 11 * sqrt (2)
