How has Western spirituality conditioned our ways of viewing/valuing artwork, and how does Berger?

According to western concepts, artwork is of no spiritual significance, since the sponsoring religion is nonsense. But artwork is a valuable record of cultural history, so it is to be preserved. For example, everything we know about ancient Egypt comes from religious artwork.
