How fast does your car need to be to not be street legal?

Generally, legality isn't about top speed but more about whether the car is safe to drive and appropriate to drive on highways and byways. A formula one car isn't street legal for instance because of the very low ground clearance. It wouldn't be practical (or possible) to drive it many places except a track. Much faster cars (such as a Bugatti Veyron which can do over 250mph) is completely street legal and was specifically designed as a road car.

thank you, that's good to know. I'm wanting to build an F1 style Go Kart.

That sounds fantastic! Good luck with that.
