The current New York Spot price is (per ounce):
Platinum - $1431.00
Gold - $752.90
Palladium - $357.00
Silver - $13.46
The difference between white and yellow gold is roughly the same due to the gold content of equal carat amounts being equal (gold content of 14kt white gold = gold content of 14kt yellow gold).
The current market price for titanium is about $25/lb which equates to $1.56 per ounce. Titanium is much harder to work with than gold therefore the labor cost of a piece of jewelry made from titanium makes the price of titanium jewelry in the same ballpark as lower kt gold pieces.
Titanium for a ring has the following advantages/disadvantages:
ADVANTAGES:
- Titanium is non-allergenic (non-reactive to human skin)
- Titanium is harder than gold therefore does not scratch as easily
DISADVANTAGES:
- Titanium rings cannot be resized
- Titanium rings cannot be cut off as easily as gold in the event of a pinch incident
Other notes:
- Platinum has the same problem as Titanium of not being able to resize it. Both metals have a very high melting point so fixing/resizing involves welding vs. soldering as in gold.
- White gold is generally plated with Rhodium every so often. 14kt white gold has a very slight tint of yellow. 18kt white gold can look almost as yellow as a dim yellow gold piece of jewelry.
- Platinum does NOT need to be coated, is much harder than gold, about the same as rhodium, and generally wears by microscratching vs. gold having larger scratches. This makes platinum look more "buffed" than scratched.
Will you sell me gold at 752? :) Ready to buy any quantity at that price
