How does hydrogen peroxide affect bacterial growth?

Hydrogen peroxide is H2O2. It breaks down to give H2O and monatomic oxygen. Oxygen is very reactive and it promptly oxidizes whatever it finds first. The effect is called bleaching but it's not as harsh as chlorine bleach.
