Well, the technically correct answer is that the earth's rotation exposes different sides of the planet to the sun at different times. But the cool answer comes from Aboriginal mythology: the sun is a beautiful lady who makes everything grow, and the moon is her lazy brother, and they had a fight, and the animals took sides, and that's why owls are nocturnal.
