my son is stuck, we have tried the mt coronet route we have also tried to get to spear pillar but can't find it

Well u need to complete the other seven gyms it is likely your son just completed the fith gym. Go to jubilee city. To the left gate there will be a dock area. Go up to the water and use hm surf on the water. Soon your pokemon will be on the water and you can ride it just keep goin u will reach a city. There will be a gym complete it will tell u how to get to the seventh gym then you after that you. Can go to sunny shore city. By the way you need to teach hm surf to a water type pokemon only then can you use it. P.s hope this helps.
