I have to find the volume of a shape shown on my paper WITHOUT using a formula. :( Google wouldn't help me.

I don't know what the shape is, however, it is possible you are supposed to describe "how" you would do it and this doesn't actually need an end-result solution.
Otherwise, to find the volume of a box without a formula, you would need to fill up the empty space with 1 inch cubes. Once you were done filling the space you would then count them appropriately to get the volume.
The question as you have stated it is just dum: you use a formula. If you had something like a light bulb, you would drill a small hole in the base and fill the globe with water and the measure the water.
The light bulb story is associated with Thomas Edison, so you might run across it if you study his history.
