How do I deal with stress?
I identify what or who is causing the stress.
It can be external such as excessive work load, poor management & the office bully.
It can be internal reasons like having poor discipline, work attitude, time management, communication, relationship skills or even perfectionism.
I have been guilty & subject to all of the above (so has most people if honest!)
How did I addressed them.
Over worked? , Are colleagues loaded the same & also stressed?
If so see your manager, ask why (nicely as he/she may be under pressure too).
I have cultivated the ability to say no, to more work in a reasoned way.
I have upped my performance on newly introduced systems with practice, employed new time management techniques, sharing experience & improved my soft skills of communication etc. In other words change old ways to work smarter in the new environment.
If I do find some tasks too demanding I break them down into smaller steps & build from there.
The simplest & most effective time management technique I have used is the simple to do list, this can be developed into a priority table version. The second being the one I use when I'm up against a rapidly approaching deadline is the one we used in examinations, that is focus & deliver what is asked for (this automatically applies the Pareto principle 20% of work their gives 80% results).
The last method of improving personal skills is cooking! It draws on organisation, technique & time skills in a non career threatening environment (unless cooking for the boss!)
Other things I do, take a break every 90 mins, make a tea/coffee talk to my mates Schools do this for a good reason, it has been proved we slow down, loose focus & make mistakes going over this limit.
Rest is important not only at work, but at home. The important thing is to forget work & do something to ensure it stays out of mind (cooking is allowed!). I have done things over & above social events family life, that raise my self esteem which include charity work, political activism, sports, fishing, drawing/painting & answering questions here!
Make sure that I get enough & regular sleep.
So these are some of the things I have done to manage stress, they work for me & I hope you find helpful. I do suggest you Google “Stress at work” (or school) & you may find ways that suit your personality more effectively.
