I just recently moved to Germany from Canada. From Koln you can go anywhere. Check out

This is the main train schedule & website. You can check any train at any time.
There are also sites in which you can travel with people in a car that are going from Koln to Halver (for example) for a flat rate - which apparently is ALOT cheaper than paying for the train which is kinda of expensive. I unfortunately do not have that website for you but you can google it for sure!
