I am a Producer of cinema released Motion Picture / Television and this is the one hurdle EVERY new, un-represented Screen Writer faces
.
If you have ever tried submitting your screenplay or 'One Page' to a Studio or Production Company, almost anywhere, you will find they say "We do not accept unsolicited material." & there is a understandable reason for this; imagine how much crap they would receive since everybody thinks they have the next trillion dollar making idea for a film. Right?.
If you have the talent as a Screen Writer it will show in your work and Agents will see it.
I'm not trying to be a jerk here but If you don't then accept it and move on. There are millions of people who think hey have the talent but sadly don't.
Just like the Music Industry, or anything to do with Entertainment, the film business, no matter if you are a Writer, Producer, Director, Actor and even a Crew Member is a very, very competitive and cut throat industry and there is only so much room for who makes it and who doesn't. And it seems to be getting more cut throat every day.
Here is my advice. It may be different than what others tell you but none the less, it's mine; STAY AWAY FROM the internet sites that claim they will sell your literary property or have it Green Lite for production. All they want is your money and will promise the world to get it.
A partner and I submitted the screenplay for the highest grossing, classic 1970's James Bond 007 film "Diamonds Are Forever" to one of the bigger of these type sites, with the same title, just to see what would happen. They responded saying there was a major studio, distributor, financial investors and a Executive Producer kicking at their door wanting to start pre - production on our script. All we had to do was pay them $500.00 and we were in the big league!.
Yah right. Never mind copyright infringement, getting your ass sued off and being blacklisted forever.
What you should do is get your portfolio of best 'one page pitch' together, put on your cleanest , hipstir clothes and stat making cold calls to Agents ' & Rep's offices. Keep stopping in and eventually they will get so tired of you they will read your work. Like I said, if you have the talent they will see it and want to represent you. That's what they do to make a living.
You can also visit The Writers Guild of America's website that has a list of Producers & Production Companies currently accepting un-solicited properties.
REMEMBER: Always register your work with the Writers Guild of America BEFORE sending it to anyone! Hell, send I to me and I'll read it!. If we like it we might contact you. We do co-produce with one of Canada's largest producer's of filmed entertainment!
