How do I get my dog to be more protective of me?

I have a 4 yr old male dog he is a mastiff and st bernard mix. I also have a bulldog puppy but I'm not talking about him. I want to know how i can get my mastiff and st bernard mix (Samson) to be more protective of me. When an unknown person or animal passes by our house he will bark but when they walk up he doesnt do anything he'll great them like he would me. So i was wondering how i could get him to be more protective of not just my house but also me.

Im not an expert with dogs but this might help........

 If he is a very playful dog then if he comes up to you  and jumps up and down tell him to go away or say a strong no! but if he is normal then try to be very good friends with him. if he barks at person that you think he should bark at, then congratulate him give him a treat or just pat him.

teach him basic discipline and be strict with him. tell him to do what you want him to do if you don't want him to do some thing then tell him and be firm.and the same if you want him to do something..

i Hope it helps. oh and 1 more thing when you walk him always and i mean always keep him on a leash this usually makes then more aggressive quickly.
