How do I get good internet without having to sign up with a Cable Company?

I want to get good internet but I don't wanna get it from providers like DirecTV or Comcast. What do I need to know about Modem, Routers and all that and what do I need to start up, period. I don't wanna buy something then it turns out I need something else and then another thing and in the end nothing connects or works together.

We only have three ways to connect: cable, DSL (phone company), and Dish. Cell phone data works, but it's too expensive. Each will tell you what you need and what it costs.
