How do I disable messenger without disabling Facebook?

Home screen, left side, click on "Messenger". On the right side, click on three dots and select "Hide Screen". On almost anything you see there will be either three dots or an arrowhead pointing down. Clicking there gets you a menu. It's a goofy system and it takes a while to figure out what to do.
